EXERCISE · BARBELL

Push Jerk

Shoulders

Before you press, you need to dip. Lower your knees by bending your legs slightly — not a deep squat, just enough to load your quads and get ready to explode. From there, drive through your heels and extend your legs hard, using that leg power to send the bar up. As the bar rises, you press it overhead and step under it, catching it in a partial squat with straight arms. The dip is what separates this from a strict press; it lets you move heavier weight by borrowing power from your legs. Don't half-ass the dip, or you'll be pressing the whole load with just your shoulders.
