Tate Press

Arms

This exercise gets its name from the arm position — your elbows bend and your upper arms stay parallel to each other, pointing to the sides. The dumbbells are held vertically, not horizontally, and they press upward and slightly forward. This is not a standard dumbbell press. It emphasizes the triceps and the front shoulders differently than a regular press because of that arm angle and the shortened range of motion. Hold the dumbbells at shoulder height with your elbows beneath your wrists, then press them up and away. The path is shorter than a full press, which is the point — it builds lockout strength for heavier pressing. Lower under control.
