EXERCISE · DUMBBELL
Lateral Raise
Shoulders
Most people load a dumbbell that's too heavy and end up throwing the weight up with their traps, shrugging every rep. Your shoulders never get the tension. Pick a weight light enough to raise one arm at a time with your shoulder still relaxed away from your ear. Start with the dumbbell by your hip, a soft bend in your elbow held constant throughout. Lift out to the side until your arm is roughly level with your shoulder, leading with your elbow rather than your hand. Lower slowly — the raise up is easy, the control down is where the muscle grows. Switch sides once you've finished your reps.
